d'Arenberg Winery's d'Arry's Original Shiraz/Grenache  2005  $17.99

Named for the winery's principal, Francis "d'Arry" d'Arenberg Osborn, this wine is his original blend of Grenache 50% & Shiraz 50%,  Going back some four decades, each  vintage's fruit is hand harvested, gently crushed, and open fermented using the "high tech" process of foot treading by wader-clad feet.   The wine is basket pressed & undergoes 18 months of careful aging in oak.   This juicy gem from McLaren Vale sees no fining or filtration, & the result is maximum flavor.  A balanced blend of Rhone varietals give this wine dense berry fruit, hints of smoked bacon, subtle herbal notes & a light spiciness.  Medium in body, but impressive for it's length of finish and overall balance and harmony of flavors.
